St Mary's Bells

St Marys Bell RingersPart of St.Mary's band led by Jenny Gordon having just achieved a Quarter Peal – It looks like fun!The light ring of six bells at St Mary's (one of the lightest rings of six bells in the Guildford Diocese and the County of Surrey) underwent substantial refurbishment at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry. Part of the renovation included the recasting of the three lightest bells. The ring retains one of the oldest bells in Surrey - the fifth bell was cast in around 1460 by a woman bellfounder, Johanna Sturdy of Croydon. The new third bell was given in memory of Betty Poxon, a member of the Parish.

Each time that you hear English church bells it is a trained bell ringer who takes hold and pulls the bell rope at handstroke and backstroke. The bells are hung in the wooden bell tower of St. Mary's above the ringers. We hope you enjoy them. The society of St. Mary's Bell ringers provide a welcoming experience and are always keen to help beginners learn.
