Lunchtime Concert – Thursday 26th March 2026 at 1 pm
James Marshall and Tom Yang – Violin and Piano Duo.
James and Tom were both students together at the Yehudi Menuhin School and are now developing their performing careers in music, Tom at Cambridge University and the Royal Academy and James at King’s College, Cambridge.
Tom (20) began his musical journey at the age of 8 at the Yehudi Menuhin School. A versatile performer, he has appeared at venues across the UK from King’s Place in London to Blair Atholl in Scotland. He regularly collaborates with instrumentalists and vocalists alike, while his piano trio, Trio Tóla, performed in West Road Concert Hall to critical acclaim. In a different capacity, Tom worked with Orchid Classics, having his orchestral arrangement ‘Horse Race’ recorded for a commercial CD project. With his current studies at St John’s College, Cambridge, and the Royal Academy of Music, Tom hopes to bridge the gap between performance theory and practice, creating performances that engage audiences intellectually and emotionally.
Described as ‘a 100% bona fide, sincere, authentic young artist’ by Alexis French (BBCYM), James (19) began violin lessons at the age of five and at age ten was accepted by the Yehudi Menuhin School following a ‘Come and Play Day’. He is currently studying music at King’s College, Cambridge, where he is a recipient of an Instrumental Award.
Throughout his time at YMS, James performed in many concerts as a soloist, chamber musician (including with Mary Bevan, Natalia Lomeiko, Dinara Klinton, and Ashley Wass) and in other larger ensembles, including the Farnham Sinfonia (March 2023). He has participated in masterclasses with Alexander Sitkovetsky, Maxim Rysanov and Menuhin’s pianist Paul Coker, with whom he has also played in recital. He won First Prize in the junior section of the Eastbourne Symphony Orchestra Young Soloist Competition (2023). He has performed recitals in London and at a number of festivals, including the King’s Lynn festival. James recently made his West Road Concert Hall debut playing Stravinsky’s A Soldier’s Tale and returned soon after to perform Mozart’s G Minor Piano Quartet. James plays a violin by the English 19th-century maker John (Jack) Lott.
Their recital at St Mary’s will include the Brahms 3rd sonata for piano and violin op 108 in D minor, the Britten Suite op 6 and Ralph Vaughan Williams The Lark Ascending.
Booking not required, we have a collection at the end of the concert.
